A Song of Ice and Fire House Tyrell Characters

house tyrell

In the current generation, House Tyrell is a stable and honestly loving family, with none of the internal rivalries that are to be found in House Lannister and House Baratheon. Thus the relationships between Lord Mace and his children, and between siblings like Loras and Margaery, are genuine and uncomplicated. After Mern was killed in the Field of Fire, Harlen quickly yielded Highgarden to Aegon the Conqueror and was made Lord of Highgarden and Warden of the South. Alla is the daughter of Ser Leo Tyrell, himself son of Mace Tyrell's distant cousin, Ser Victor Tyrell, and Alys Beesbury. The youngest brother of the late Lord Luthor and uncle of Lord Mace.

Sworn Houses

In the books, as in the series, the Lannisters grow increasingly concerned with how much power the Tyrells managed to gain. Ever since the second novel, the Tyrells become the Lannisters' most important allies, and they take full advantage of that to increase their (and their bannermen) political power, slowly but surely. Besides his wife, Tyrell is survived by his mother, Ruth; a daughter, Sandra; two sons, Jon and Randy, and a grandson, Joshua. During the War of the Five Kings, the Tyrells of Highgarden declared their support of King Renly Baratheon after Renly's marriage to Margarey Tyrell, daughter of Lord Mace Tyrell.

Deposed Houses of the Reach

Mace's mother, the indomitable Olenna Tyrell, assumed House Tyrell's lordship after Margaery, Loras, and Mace Tyrell were all killed by wildfire at the destruction of the Great Sept of Baelor. Under Olenna, House Tyrell realigned itself with House Targaryen and declared for Daenerys Targaryen in opposition against Cersei Lannister, who had orchestrated the downfall of House Tyrell. With the death of Olenna after the Sack of Highgarden, the House has officially become extinct. In the TV series, the Tyrell family is very small, has only four known members of the main branch. The Lords Paramount of the Reach and Wardens of the South from their flowery seat at Highgarden.

Mace's Family

While dependable, honorable, and loyal, the men of House Tyrell aren't particularly intelligent or adept at politics. Instead, the female members of House Tyrell (such as Margaery and her father's mother, Olenna) are the intelligent ones who actively plan out the political course that House Tyrell will take. An exception to this is Lord Mace's eldest son, Willas, who, unlike his father and two younger brothers (Garlan and Loras), is said to be quite well-educated. In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, House Tyrell is a powerful noble house. The Reach is the most populous region of the Seven Kingdoms, and the Tyrells can field the largest army on the continent, although the Lannisters, being richer, can better equip their troops. This makes the Tyrells formidable enemies but excellent allies.

Ser Loras Tyrell

Forming an alliance with House Lannister he was soon joined by Tywin's army to march on and defeat Stannis at the Battle of the Blackwater. House Tyrell never ruled as "kings and queens", as opposed to the Starks, Lannisters, or Arryns. Before King Aegon I Targaryen's invasion and unification of the Seven Kingdoms, the Tyrells were stewards to House Gardener, the Kings of the Reach. The Tyrells had responsibility for maintaining the castle of Highgarden, the seat of royal power in the Reach. In the battle known as the Field of Fire, King Mern IX Gardener and all of his issue were burned alive by Aegon's dragons.

Lord Garlan Tyrell, Lord of Brightwater Keep

After questioning Brienne at King's Landing, he no longer suspected her. Loras later joined the Kingsguard and quickly reasserted his popularity with the citizens of King's Landing. He was sent to end the siege of Dragonstone, where, according to reports, he was horribly injured by boiling oil and possibly near death. As the second richest house, Tyrell soldiers seem to be well-equipped, yet still far behind to the Lannisters.

Margaery and Tommen grow close, and she tells him how a King acts, infuriating Cersei. The new Queen continues growing in popularity among the smallfolk. Only daughter of Mace Tyrell, Margaery is an intelligent and shrewd young woman, very much the protégé of her cunning grandmother, Olenna Tyrell. She is described as very beautiful, with softly curling light brown hair, brown eyes and a slender yet shapely figure. After Renly's assassination, Loras became enraged with grief and tried to kill Brienne of Tarth and Catelyn Stark, whom he believed guilty of Renly's murder.

Meanwhile, Sansa escapes from King’s Landing, and Petyr tells her Olenna planned Joffrey’s death. Ser Jaime Lannister frees his brother Tyrion, and on his way out of King’s Landing, Tyrion sneaks into the Tower of the Hand and kills his father. With Osmund and his son, Ser Robert Tyrell’s help, King Mern VI ruled exceptionally. He was so pleased with Robert’s service that he gave his youngest daughter’s hand in marriage to the High Steward as a reward.

Wiki of Westeros

Tyrell attended his last council meeting on Sept. 17, Wilford said. He entered the hospital on Sept. 30 in grave condition and slipped into a coma a few days later, she said. While I was losing myself in the weeds of misery that grow thick in Westeros and Essos alike, I lost sight of the nature of the story I was watching.

After Renly’s death, Tyrion sends Petyr to create a new alliance with the Tyrells. He succeeds, and Lord Mace Tyrell joins forces with Lord Tywin Lannister to defeat Stannis Baratheon. Margaery gets engaged to King Joffrey Baratheon, and her brother Loras becomes a member of the Kingsguard. As the War of the Five Kings starts, Loras becomes the Lord Commander of the Rainbow Guard for Renly. His father, Mace Tyrell, becomes Hand of the King, and Renly gains control of the mightiest army in the Seven Kingdoms.

Lords of Brightwater Keep, one of the major vassal Houses in the Reach. They were actually more closely related than the Tyrells to the old House Gardener kings before they went extinct in the Targaryen Conquest. The Tyrells only descend from the Gardeners through the female line, but the Florents were a cadet branch founded by a younger Gardener son. The Florents were already major lords, when the Tyrells didn't even have their own lands and were just hereditary stewards of Highgarden for their Gardener cousins. Nonetheless, Aegon the Conqueror passed over the Florents to give rule over all of the Reach to the Tyrells, because they voluntarily surrendered Highgarden (after he killed the Gardener king at the Field of Fire).

Their coat of arms depicts a golden rose on a green field and their motto is “Growing Strong.” House Tyrell oversees the Reach and they hold the castle Highgarden. Unlike other great houses in Westeros, the Tyrells were never Kings. They were the High Steward to House Gardener, the Kings of the Reach. After Aegon’s conquest, they became the lords of Highgarden and Lord Paramount of the Reach. House Tyrell is the principal noble house in the Reach; many lesser houses are sworn to them. As D.B. Weiss summed it up in a Season 2 featurette, in the current generation House Tyrell is a closet matriarchy of sorts.

Mace's son Loras was a noted tournament knight and, secretly, the lover of Lord Renly Baratheon. Mace's daughter Margaery married Renly when he crowned himself king in the War of the Five Kings to cement an alliance between Renly and her father. Following Renly's death, Margaery was then married to King Joffrey Baratheon before his assassination at his wedding feast. She was then married to his younger brother, King Tommen Baratheon.

It is relatively quite unknown how the Tyrell army is experienced in terms of warfare since most of their army didn't partake in pitch battles during the War of the Five Kings. Numerous battles such as the Battle of the Blackwater showed it’s capability in combat, wherein the combined cavalry of both House Lannister and Tyrell easily managed to crush Stannis Baratheon's army with ease. Although it can be considered that they fought using mounted soldiers which gives an advantage compared to the foot soldiers used during the battle. Later in Season 7, it is revealed that the Tyrell army is incapable of fighting as stated by Olenna Tyrell by grimly stating "It was never our forte".

Only spoilers from the current season will be hidden, so beware spoilers if you're not up to date on the episodes. The Game of Thrones section of Book Analysis analyzes and explores the Game of Thrones series. Mace is an ambitious man who agreed to marry his daughter to Joffrey because he wanted his family to have a royal line.

As a result, the Florents have often bucked the authority of the Tyrells in the past three centuries since the Targaryen conquest. Despite the Tyrell army being diverse and ornamentally impressive in design, their vassals seem to follow this motif (bright colored armor and steel plates) despite their preference to be considered as independent houses. Most notably, House Tarly which used red tunics and steel armor which distinguishes them from House Tyrell.
